Profile

Peter (Piotr) Laniewski was born in Sydney. He was educated at St Patrick's College Strathfield and graduated from the University of NSW in 1991. He completed fellowships in General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery before further sub-specialty training at the prestigious Royal Marsden Hospital in London. He worked with internationally recognised leading specialists at the Marsden, consolidating an interest in breast reconstruction and consequently all forms of cosmetic breast surgery. He was fortunate to have received further training at some of the most exclusive institutions in London refining his interest in rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation. While he was overseas he attended international scientific meetings, keeping pace with the latest surgical techniques addressing the explosion in body contouring surgery following bariatric surgery. His initial training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was in Sydney, principally at Westmead, St Vincent's, Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore, Concord and Prince of Wales Hospitals. He has been working as a plastic surgeon in North Western Sydney focusing on delivering improved access to breast reconstruction at Westmead and Gosford public Hospitals and at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. His practice is based at the San Clinic and Norwest Business Park Bella Vista. He has a large skin cancer practice with particular expertise in elegantly reconstructing facial defects following the removal of all types of skin cancer. Apart from breast and skin cancer surgery his interests include non-surgical facial rejuvenation, facial aesthetic surgery, rhinoplasty, otoplasty, body contouring surgery and hand surgery. He is an active member of the Westmead Head and Neck Cancer Clinic, Westmead Melanoma Clinic and The Breast Cancer Institute of NSW. His on call responsibilities also encompass management of acute hand injuries and facial trauma. His early career as a resident medical officer at Westmead Hospital gave him a strong grounding in the management of the critically ill patient. His training in General Surgery included a heavy exposure to trauma before the concept of safe working hours was known. He received excellent training in advanced laparoscopic techniques and in particular oncological surgery. He trained in some of the busiest surgical oncological units in Sydney treating breast cancer and head and neck cancer at Westmead, Concord and Royal Prince Alfred Hospitals.

Research

Dr Laniewski's research interests are clinically based focusing improving the outcome of reconstructive surgery for all patients that he sees. He is particularly concerned in improving access for women to reconstructive surgery following surgery for breast cancer. Part of his work is to research the ways in which the lives of patients that have head and neck reconstructive surgery can be further improved and to share his results with the wider plastic surgery community. He is also keenly interested in refining facial aesthetic surgery, again measuring outcome and improving patient education.
