Breast Imaging Surveillance
This is for women who have no breast problem they are aware of, but want the reassurance that their breasts are being thoroughly checked. This will include imaging with mammograms, ultrasound and MRI as needed. For some women, expert advice on an ongoing surveillance program may be needed from one of our breast specialists. If an abnormality is found, we will ensure that you are informed immediately and a management plan co-ordinated with you, your GP or referring doctor and possibly one of our breast specialists.
Assessment and management for breast symptoms
San Breast Care offers a full range of diagnostic services as well as access to a team of expert breast specialists for women and men who have noted a change in their breasts. Any change or ongoing concern should be assessed thoroughly. San Breast Care will make sure everything that is needed will be done in a timely and efficient way. We know this can be stressful and we want you to get the answers you need with as little fuss as possible.
Management of a wide range of benign breast problems
People can experience a wide range of breast-related issues – including pain, skin changes, nipple skin changes, nipple discharge, infection, lumps, thickening, size discrepancy, shape abnormalities, size and scarring.
It is generally best to have a GP review the situation and then refer either to San Breast Care Radiology for breast imaging or to one of our specialists for advice and management. In these cases our specialists will generally be dedicated breast surgeons or specialist plastic surgeons. All of our breast surgeons have specialised training in diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant breast problems.

Navigators are on-site and across all cases, so they know where each woman is in her journey and can provide information or direction at any time. Navigators facilitate the care, taking away the burden of having to arrange appointments and find out where to go.
Oncology services available through San Breast Care include Radiation Oncology (Radiotherapy), Medical Oncology and Genetic Oncology.
Radiotherapy, or radiation therapy, is another common treatment that is used following breast surgery for cancer. ICON Radiation Oncology Centre provides a wide range of radiation treatments on site in the san Integrated Cancer centre. The centre is part of the International ICON Group, Australia's largest dedicated provider of cancer care.
This treatment uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells. The most common radiation treatment for breast cancer is external beam radiation therapy. Using a machine called a Linear Accelerator, a beam of radiation is directed at the breast from a number of angles to ensure an even dose to the treatment area. Radiotherapy is delivered on an outpatient basis, and a course of radiotherapy would be given five days a week for four to seven weeks.
Northern Haematology and Oncology
Northern Haematology and Oncology is a private practice located within the San Integrated Cancer Centre. The team, made up of medical oncologists are specialist physicians trained in diagnosing and treating cancer using chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormonal, biological and targeted therapies.

San Breast Care Genetic Oncology
Sydney Cancer Genetics provide risk assessment, genetic testing and risk management for patients and their families. As a private service, wait times are short and results quickly available to guide treatment choices. Testing may include somatic (tumour) testing looking for druggable targets or germline (blood) testing looking for inherited mutations that may place a patient and/or their family at high risk of cancer(s).
There is no obligation to have a test and testing for Medicare eligible patients is always bulk billed. Self-funded testing is also available, even for patients who have not had cancer. Knowing about your risk means you can do something about it. If you have travelled to San Breast Care from outside Sydney, we provide Telehealth consults anywhere in Australia (and these are bulk billed under item 112 for eligible rural patients).
