Profile
Dr Thomas Peter Gavaghan graduated MB BS (Hon) from NSW University in 1977 and became a member of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 1984. He trained at St. Vincent's Hospital from 1978 to 1983 as a cardiology registrar and then from 1984 to 1987 as a research fellow in cardiology, undertaking research in post operative atrial arrhythmias, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and clinical follow up of the early evolution of angioplasty at St. Vincent's Hospital. Between 1985 and 1988 he completed an extensive clinical research program, proving in several publications the protective benefit of low dose antiplatelet therapy in coronary vein graft patency. This trial and clinical work entailed a broad experience in coronary angiography and coronary angioplasty. In 1987 he worked as a full-time locum VMO at St. Vincent's Hospital whilst completing the publication of research results from previous years. From 1988 to 2010 he has worked as a full-time consultant clinical cardiologist in Sydney's northern suburbs and northern penninsula, with a strong emphasis on coronary angiography, interventional cardiac techniques (angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, peripheral vascular intervention), and investigation of new interventional techniques (PFO and ASD closure, atrila appendage closure and percutaneous aortic valve implants).
Research
Dr Gavaghan has special interest in antiplatelet therapy in coronary artery disease, acute interventional management of acute myocardial infarction, and evolving acute interventional cardiac techniques.
