San Palliative Care nurse delivers granddaughter in the driveway

After 20 years working in oncology and palliative care at the San, well known Clinical Nurse Specialist Leonie Cain has been involved in lots of moving and emotional care giving moments, but Monday’s delivery of her granddaughter in the carport of her son’s home could be amongst the most dramatic…

Not expecting the new arrival until Easter Sunday, Leonie was called from work last Monday afternoon to urgently transport expectant mum Michelle who rang to say things were progressing a little faster than expected for the birth of her first child and that she was waiting in the car outside her Pennant Hills home with a packed bag for the trip to Hornsby Hospital where she was scheduled to deliver.

The baby however had other ideas and within only 5 minutes of Leonie’s arrival and with only just enough time to grab some clean towels, Leonie was welcoming her granddaughter into the world.

Leonie said although it had been a long time since she was involved in a birth, her 47 years of nursing stood her in good stead.

Baby Evaleia has been named after her maternal grandmother whose birthday it was on Monday and who was the previous owner of the car she was delivered in.
