Stairs & Crutches Exercises

The following exercises have been prepared by a San physiotherapist to assist you in getting about on crutches following your surgery. You may like to start practising these prior to surgery to ensure that you are competent on stairs and with crutches on your return home.

Prehab exercises for using stairs or crutchesWalking with crutches / sticks

Place your crutches/sticks forward.

Place your affected leg between the crutches.

Step forward with your healthy leg.

 

 


Prehab exercises for using stairs and crutchesWalking up stairs

Stand with crutches/sticks close to the stairs.

First take a step up with your healthy leg.

Then take a step up with your affected leg.

Then bring your crutches up onto the step.

Always go one step at a time.


Prehab exercises for using stairs and crutchesWalking down stairs

Stand with crutches/sticks close to the stairs.

First put your crutches one step down.

Then take a step down with your affected leg.

Then take a step down with your healthy leg, onto the same step as your affected leg.

Always go one step at a time.
